We are recruiting a Maritime Security Advisor to join Maritime New Zealand’s Maritime Security team, within the Safety and Response Group.  The role will be based in Wellington.

About us:

Maritime New Zealand is the regulatory compliance and response agency for the safety, security and environmental protection of New Zealand’s coastal and inland waterways. It helps to develop and maintain the national safety, security and environmental protection regulations that govern the operation of vessels, ports and offshore installations in New Zealand waters.

About the role:

The Maritime Security Advisor, coordinates and manages the Maritime New Zealand obligation under the Maritime Security Act (MS Act)  for New Zealand Ports and international Shipping visiting NZ  ports.  It is important that NZ ports remain compliant to the MS Act to ensure that NZ is able to trade internationally under an effective maritime security regulatory regime.  Importantly, ports are required to maintain effective security measures which are aligned to New Zealand’s national security levels.  The role has a significant domestic travel component as there is a need to engage with Government agencies, Ports, and Industry in order to maintain effective relationships, through liaison and to attend security exercises.  There may be a requirement to undertake travel in the Pacific to contribute to capacity building as appropriate.

This role requires someone who has proven experience identifying and minimising potential risk and creating improvements in efficiency and effectiveness.  You will need to have effective relationship skills with moral courage, who confidently guides people through times of a Maritime Security incident.  Ideally you will be familiar with New Zealand’s National Security framework and be familiar with New Zealand’s all of Government process.  Good awareness of emergency management principles, practice and procedures and experience is required, including NZ Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS).

The successful candidate will need to have a current and clean Driver Licence and you also must be  able to hold and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.

About the team:

Maritime New Zealand’s Maritime Security team ensure all New Zealand trading ports are compliant to the Maritime Security Act, that Maritime New Zealand is well connected to the New Zealand intelligence community allowing us to operate appropriately under current and changing National risk levels.

The team also ensures the organisation contributes to the NZ National Security framework, and exploits the capacity of the All of Government capability to be able to respond effectively and efficiently to a heightened risk environment.

This position reports to the Manager Maritime Security.
